## Definitions

### Apparatus

Apparatus is a finished appliance or combination made available on the market as one functional unit, intended for the end user, that can generate electromagnetic disturbance or have its performance affected by such disturbance. Certain components, sub-assemblies, and mobile installations are treated as apparatus when the Directive's conditions are met.

**Why it matters here:** Apparatus follows the market-product route: EMC assessment, conformity assessment, technical documentation, EU declaration of conformity, CE marking, instructions, traceability, and economic-operator duties.

### Fixed installation

A fixed installation is a particular combination of several types of apparatus and, where applicable, other devices that are assembled, installed, and intended for permanent use at a predefined location.

**Why it matters here:** A fixed installation does not follow the ordinary apparatus CE-marking route as a whole. It must meet the essential requirements, apply documented good engineering practices, and keep records identifying the installation and the responsible person for as long as the installation operates.

### Harmonised standards

Harmonised standards are European standards adopted on a European Commission request for applying Union harmonisation legislation. An EMC standard supports a presumption of conformity only after its reference is published in the Official Journal and only for the essential requirements and conditions it covers.

**Why it matters here:** The manufacturer must record the standards and editions applied, partial application or deviations, uncovered requirements, and supporting tests. A standard's withdrawal or a product change can require reassessment.
